ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Sophomore Bryan Storie earned runner-up honors out of 64 runners in the 8-kilometer race and sophomore Holly Moreland placed ninth out of 67 on the 6-kilometer course for the LaGrange College cross country teams on Saturday at the N.C. Wesleyan Invitational.
Storie, who placed first overall at the Middle Georgia Invitational on Sept. 7, posted a career-best time of 28:13.2, clearing third place by 3.4 seconds. The sophomore standout has been the Panthers' top-finisher in all nine of his career meets, cracking the top-eight overall four times.
Moreland covered the 6-kilometer course in a time of 27:37.5, which cleared 10th place by 2.1 seconds. The second-year collegiate runner has finished in the top-11 overall four times during her career, while placing 28th overall at the 2018 USA South Championships and 87th with a personal record of 25:31.00 at the 2018 NCAA South/Southeast Regionals.
On Saturday, the men's team finished fourth out of eight with a team score of 111 and the women's squad earned seventh-place recognition out of 10 with a score of 153.
Freshman Alex Whiten placed 22nd overall, clocking a personal-best time of 29:33.3. Whiten was the Panthers' top-performer at the Middle Georgia Invitational and has finished in the second slot for the team in the other two meets this season.
Sophomore Karli Whitaker was the team's third-place finisher for the second time this season, placing 36th overall with a time of 32:39.9, while junior Alexis Westrick placed 39th overall (personal-best time of 32:59.4). Other noteworthy performances on the women's side came from junior Natalie Glass (personal-best time of 34:05.4) and freshman Jessica Breeding (34:09.7), who was making her collegiate debut for LaGrange.
On the men's side, freshman Jyheem Rollins was the Panthers' No. 2 finisher for the third straight meet, placing 27th overall (personal-best time of 32:22.9), while freshman Garret Callahan finished one slot behind at No. 28 (personal-best time of 32:36.4).
Senior Darius Wonnum grabbed 32nd-place recognition with a personal record of 34:05.5, while freshman Elijah Rachel (35:11.8), freshman Malcolm Roberts (35:24.1), junior Gavin Battle (36:38.1) and senior Kyle Hildebrand (46:46.7) all set personal records.
The Panther teams will be back in action on Oct. 5 at the Foothills Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville State University in Oxford, Ala.
