MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The LaGrange volleyball team beat Berea 3-1 to pick up its 20th win of the season at a tri-match Saturday hosted by Maryville College. The Panthers reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2005.
The Panthers (20-13, 7-8 USA South) lost 3-1 to Maryville in the first match of the day. The Scots (16-14, 10-5 USA South) took the match 25-19, 25-13, 14-25, 25-22. Maggie Ivester was one of two Panthers with double-doubles in the match. Ivester finished with 13 kills and 17 digs. Lauren Sanders had 19 assists and 12 digs, while Sterling Ancrum tied Ivester for the team lead with 17 digs.
Against Berea, the Panthers took a hard-fought 27-25 victory in the first set. Berea evened the match with a 28-26 second set win. The Panther took the final two sets by identical 25-18 scores.
Samantha James had a match-high 15 kills and a .433 attack percentage. Ivester and Sanders each had double-doubles again. Ivester had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Sanders added 30 assists and 16 digs. Ancrum led the Panthers with 21 digs.
The Panthers will face Huntingdon in the first round of the USA South Tournament on Tuesday at 5 p.m. EDT at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. The LaGrange-Huntingdon winner will play the West Division top seed Covenant at 7 p.m.
