GREENSBORO, N.C. - LaGrange had its season end with losses to Greensboro and Meredith in a USA South tri-match Saturday. The Panthers finished the season 9-20 overall and 2-9 in their first season in the USA South.
The Panthers lost both matches in five sets. Greensboro won 25-18, 27-25, 24-26, 23-25 and 15-8. Meredith won 17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 and 15-13.
Trailing 2-0 against Greensboro, the Panthers rallied to tie the match. Katie Covington had seven of her team leading 21 kills in the third set and served an ace to finish the set. Leslie Rhoades put down a kill for the winning point to tie the match in the fourth set.
The Pride never trailed in the fifth set. Covington's kill got the Panthers within one, 6-5. But the Panthers never got closer as the Pride closed out the match by taking the fifth set 15-8.
The Panthers got off to a good start against Meredith by taking the first set 25-17. After Meredith took the second set 25-21, the Panthers went up 2-1 with a 25-23 third set win, only to have the Avenging Angels tie the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
In the fifth set, the Panthers scored the first three points and lead 8-4 after a service ace from Destinee Briskey. They led 11-6 after McKinstry put down a kill.
Meredith ran off six straight points to go up 12-11. Ali Hudgins' kill tied the set for the last time at 12. The Avenging Angels scored three of the final four points to take the match.
Hayley LaFontaine led the Panthers against Meredith with 15 kills. Covington and McKinstry each had double-doubles. Covington had 14 kills and 17 digs, while McKinstry had 47 assists and 13 digs.
The matches were the final ones for Covington and McKinstry, both seniors. Covington finished her career with 921 kills, good for fifth on the school all-time list. McKinstry finished her career third on the school assists list with 2,319.
