Volleyball: Panthers lose two USA South matches Sunday

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange lost a pair of USA South matches Sunday. The Panthers (9-17, 2-6 USA South) lost by 3-0 scores to North Carolina Wesleyan and Maryville in the tri-match.

North Carolina Wesleyan (18-8, 7-1 USA South)  defeated the Panthers 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17. The Bishops never trailed in the match and got 14 kills from Anna Hart. Kristi Lucas had a double-double of 32 assists and 12 digs.

Katie Covington and Hayley LaFontaine each had seven kills for the Panthers. Covington and Destinee Briskey each had nine digs, while Erin McKinstry had 25 assists.

The Panthers fell 25-13, 25-19 and 25-21 to Maryville (17-10, 8-1 USA South) in their final match of the day. The Panthers led 19-18 in the second set before the Scots scored the final seven points to take the set.

In the third set, the Panthers tied the score at 17 after a kill by LaFontaine. Rebekah Hicks' kill gave the Panthers their last lead, 19-18. Covington's kill tied the set for the final time at 20-20.

Covington led the Panthers with 10 kills, while LaFontaine had 13 digs. Kara Strickland paced Maryville with a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs.

The Panthers host Piedmont in a USA South match Wednesday.
