Women's Soccer: Stanfield's hat trick sends Panthers past Toccoa Falls

TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. - Sophomore Shelby Stanfield's three goals led LaGrange to a 5-0 win Thursday night over Toccoa Falls. It was the season opener for the Panthers (1-0), who handed the host Eagles (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Stanfield's three goals was the second hat trick of her career. She had four goals against Wesleyan last season.

Freshman Trayton Carson-Tanner and sophomore Mary Robertson each had a goal. Sophomore Brittany Gray had two assists, while Heather French and Melanie Sommers each had an assist.

The Panthers had an 18-7 shot advantage in the game. The Eagles had only one shot on goal against goalkeeper Chelsea Totaro, who recorded her fourth career shutout.

Stanfield opened the scoring in the 32nd minute of the first half. French flicked a pass over a defender and Stanfield put it past goalkeeper Maria Miner.

The Panthers went up 2-0 seven minutes later on another goal from Stanfield. Gray sent a crossing pass that Stanfield headed in.

In the second half, the Panthers needed only 43 seconds to open up a 3-0 lead. Carson-Tanner took a through ball from Gray and blasted it past Miner from inside the 18 yard line.

Stanfield finished her scoring with an assist from Sommers less than four minutes later to make it 4-0. Robertson finished the Panthers' scoring with an unassisted goal after a turnover by an Eagle defender.

The Panthers play at Emmanuel on Tuesday.
