Women's Basketball: Panthers use strong third quarter to beat Covenant 61-36

LaGrange used a strong third quarter to down Covenant 61-36 in a USA South game Saturday in Mariotti Gym. The Panthers' second straight win upped their record to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

"I was pleased with our effort on both ends of the court. Our defense set the tone early and it was great to see," said Coach Lee Buchanan, whose LC teams are now 34-1 when holding an opponent to 50 points or less. "Our rebounding was outstanding again tonight and when we play good defense and rebound the ball that well, we have a good chance to win. We had good contributions from a lot of different players today and that was great to see."

Senior Marilauren Farr had her second straight game-leading double-double, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jahpera McEachin followed with 12 points. Jalaya Lewis had 5 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. The Panthers had a 47-38 advantage on the boards, including a 19-9 edge at the offensive end. The Panthers outscored Covenant 30-12 in the paint.

"Jalaya and Jada (Brown) gave us a big lift in both halves today and Daijah (Cousins) has had two solid games back-to-back. It was truly a complete team effort this weekend that resulted in two quality wins."

Farr had 10 of her points and 8 rebounds to help the Panthers take a 28-19 halftime lead. McEachin's jumper put LC ahead to stay midway through the first period. The Panthers put the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Scots (4-10, 2-4 USA South) 23-5. Farr and McEachin combined for 14 points in the period. Megan English's layup gave the Panthers their largest lead, 51-24, with 1:36 left in the quarter.

The Panthers travel to Sewanee on Tuesday for a non-conference game.
