Women's Basketball: Panthers top Bob Jones 68-64 in LaGrange Classic opener

LaGrange moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 68-64 win over Bob Jones in its own LaGrange College Classic on Thursday. The Panthers will face Pensacola Christian on Friday at 4 p.m.

Junior Mykelli Taylor led LC with 15 points, all on 3-pointers. Sadie Desroches and Marilauren Farr each had 11 points, while Riley Chlupacek added 10. Farr came within a rebound of her second straight double-double, finishing with nine.

"This was a really hard fought game with a real good Bob Jones team. We played really well in spurts and got contributions from a lot of people," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "We have 11 new players and are still working through some things but getting better each day.

"I was really proud of our overall effort. I thought Sadie really was a difference maker in the second half. She really pushed the the tempo and got some open looks. Mykelli and Riley had some huge 3's for us and we had good scoring balance."

Bob Jones (1-3) led 31-30 at halftime. With the score tied at 37, the Panthers reeled off 16 straight points. Taylor had a pair of treys, along with one from Chlupacek during the run. Daijah Cousins' layup gave LC a 53-37 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter.

The Bruins chipped away at the lead, aided by poor free throw shooting from the Panthers. LC was only 9-of-22 at the free throw line in the second half. Madison Shupes' 3-pointer for the Bruins made it a 3-point game, 67-64. Chlupacek made the second of two free throws for the 68-64 final.

The Panthers forced 23 turnovers in the game, while committing only 12. The Bruins held a 45-38 rebounding advantage.

"I really believe the turnover difference was a big factor in the game," said Buchanan. "We did a nice job of taking care of the ball in the second half. We have to do a lot better job at the free throw line and must continue to improve our rebounding."
