Women's Basketball: Covenant hands Panthers 56-49 USA South loss

Covenant handed LaGrange a 56-49 loss in a USA South game Saturday in Mariotti Gym. The loss left the Panthers 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

Riley Chlupacek had a game-high 17 points to lead the Panthers. Sarah Evans had eight points and Lauren Johnson seven.

"This was a really tough game today with such a quick turnaround and having a short bench," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "Give Covenant credit, they had a good game plan today and stuck with it. Jaelynn (James) and Lauren (Johnson) both played today even though they have been sick and out. Riley shot the ball well and seems to getting her rhythm back on offense.

"Unfortunately, we just didn't have enough in the tank today to sustain our defensive intensity and get stops when we needed them. We have to keep working hard in practice and must continue to work to get healthy."

Covenant (6-9, 2-4 USA South) twice led by 10 points in the first two periods. Trailing 22-12, the Panthers rallied to take the lead by halftime. Johnson tied the game at 27 with a 3-pointer and hit a pair of free throws with a second left for a 29-27 lead.

In the third quarter, the Scots held LC to eight points to take a 41-37 lead to the final period. Down 11, 50-39, the Panthers made a late run. Chlupacek's trey made it a three-point game, 52-49, with 2:38 left. But the Scots held LC scoreless the rest of the way to seal the win.

The Panthers play at Wesleyan on Wednesday in a USA South game.
