Women's Basketball: Panthers take division-leading Maryville to the wire before falling

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange took Maryville down to the wire before falling 64-62 on Friday night. The Panthers are now 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in the USA South.

Marilauren Farr scored a game-high 18 points for the Panthers. Lauren Johnson fueled LC's rally in the fourth quarter with 11 of her 12 points. Kymberli Payno had 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

"I was pleased with our effort tonight and the way we prepared for this game," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "I'm so disappointed for our players because we can't seem to get any luck at the end of games. We have lost seven games this year by a total of 30 points and it's disheartening for all of us. We did some good things during the game but a few plays late just didn't go our way."

Maryville, the West Division leaders, improved to 16-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference play. The Lady Scots took a 50-37 lead into the final period and led 54-40 with 8:34 remaining.

Johnson scored eight straight points to draw the Panthers within six, 56-50. Still trailing by seven with 3:42 left, the Panthers put together an 8-1 run to tie the game. Kelsey Walthall put back her own missed shot to knot the game at 62 with 44 seconds showing.

Maryville ran the clock down before drawing a foul with five seconds on the clock. Alison Freiermuth made the first free throw, then missed the second. Lauren Biliter got the rebound and was fouled. She also made 1-of-2 at the line for a 64-62 lead with three seconds left.

After a pair of timeouts, the Panthers had one last chance at tying or winning the game. But Riley Chlupacek's 3-point attempt was blocked as time expired.

The Panthers host Toccoa Falls in a non-conference game Tuesday.
