PENSACOLA, Fla. - LaGrange pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Pensacola Christian in a non-conference game Saturday. It was the second straight win for the Panthers (2-1).
"I really thought we played hard and smart tonight. Pensacola is a tough team to guard but we did a good job of finding their shooters and contesting their shots," Coach Lee Buchanan said. "We also did a great job on the glass and did not give them many second chance points.
"Offensively we are starting to click. I was really proud of our team and their effort."
Junior Kelsey Walthall led all scorers with 16 points. Walthall was 8-of-9 from the field and had four steals. Freshman Marilauren Farr had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Madison Barker also had 14 points and added eight rebounds.
Kymberli Payno also had eight rebounds as the Panthers had a 52-33 rebounding advantage. The Panthers had 22 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second chance points.
Pensacola led 21-13 at the outset of the second quarter. The Panthers tied the game at 23 after Barker made a pair of free throws. Kelsey Mitchell followed with a steal at the defensive end as Lauren Johnson scored off the turnover for a 27-25 lead.
The Panthers took the lead for good in the final 20 seconds of the period. Walthall scored on a put back for a 33-32 lead. Mitchell drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 36-32 at halftime.
The Panthers controlled the third quarter and led 53-45 heading into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Johnson's short jumper gave the Panthers their largest lead, 61-47, with 5:30 remaining.
The Panthers play at Emory on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
