Softball: Panthers sweep USA South doubleheader at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange swept Covenant in a USA South doubleheader Saturday. The Panthers came from behind to win 6-3 in the first game, then completed the sweep with a 2-0 win in the second game.

The Panthers upped their season record to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in the USA South. Covenant slipped to 6-12 and 3-7 in the conference.

Olivia Wolfe (6-2) pitched seven innings of relief in the first game and hit a home run in the second game for the Panthers. 

Wolfe relieved Kara Patterson in the first inning with two runs in and a runner on second. She retired the next three batters to get out of the inning and allowed only one run on five hits the rest of the way.

The Panthers wiped out a 3-1 deficit in the fourth inning. Dani Gravett and Keeley Murray opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

Brooke Turner, who was 3-for-3, doubled in Gravett for the first run of the inning. Adrienne Little followed with a triple to score pinch-runner Lindsey Hogane and Turner to put the Panthers up 4-3.

In the fifth, the Panthers added to their lead. With one out, Christy Flick singled and came around to score as Gravett tripled to right center. Murray followed with a double to bring in Gravett and put the Panthers up 6-3.

Wolfe closed out the game by striking out the side in the seventh for the 6-3 final. She finished with eight strikeouts.

The Panthers had 14 hits in the game, their second highest of the season. In addition to Turner, Gravett also had three hits.

In the second game, Gravett (4-3) threw a complete game two-hitter. She walked three and struck out a season-high seven.

Gravett also had two hits, including a double, at the plate. Wolfe had her third home run of the season included in her two hits. The Panthers finished with nine hits.

The Panthers broke up a scoreless game in the fourth inning with their first run. Wolfe singled and went to third one out later on a double by Gravett. Murray delivered the two-out hit, scoring Wolfe for a 1-0 lead.

Wolfe gave Gravett an insurance run in the sixth. She led off the inning with her home run off Hannah Rogers (2-6). All three of her home runs have come on the road.

The Panthers play at Agnes Scott in a non-conference doubleheader Monday.
