Men's Soccer: Huntingdon spoils 2012 season opener for Panthers

Huntingdon made a first half lead hold up for a 2-1 win over LaGrange in the 2012 season opener for both teams Friday night at Panther Field.

The Panthers led first but Huntingdon scored twice in an 88-second span to take the lead for good. The Hawks made the lead stand up as goalkeeper Matt Russell had seven saves, five coming in the first half.

Adrien Vakerics got the Panthers on the board first in the 24th minute. Russell stopped Vakerics in front of the goal, only to have the ball kick away. Vakerics took advantage of the turnover with a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The lead last less than 10 minutes. Jack Allen beat Panther goalkeeper Donnie Palmer with a shot from the right side into the far upper corner to tie the game. Seconds later, Stacy Terry lofted a shot into the goal from 20 yards out to put the Hawks 2-1 at halftime.

Both teams had limited scoring chances in the second half. The Panthers' best scoring chance came midway through the half. Dylan Corbett's shot from in front of the goal mouth was turned by a Hawk defender.

The Panthers ended with an 8-5 edge in shot in the game. All eight of the Panthers' shots were on goal as Russell finished with seven saves for Huntingdon.

The Panthers begin a stretch of six straight games on the road Monday, Sept. 3 at Talladega (Ala.)
