Men's Basketball: Averett ends Panthers' four-game winning streak

DANVILLE, Va. - LaGrange's four-game winning streak ended with a 89-87 loss to Averett on Sunday in the Grant Center. The Panthers are now 12-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The host Cougars evened their season record at 10-10 and upped their conference mark to 5-7.

Jamison McCray led four Panthers in double figures with 22 points. Alex Bonner had a double-double of 15 points and a career-high 10 assists. He is the first Panther to have at least 10 assists in a game since Wesley Jones had 12 on Feb. 23, 2001 against Fisk University. Travis Thompson followed with 18 points. Michael McCauley added 12 points and had a career-high four blocked shots. 

LC, led by Bonner, had a season-high 23 assists in the game. The Panthers shot 56.7 in the game. They were 86.4 percent from the free throw line, making 11-of-13. It was the fourth straight game the Panthers have shot over 80 percent at the line.

The game was tied 12 times and the lead changed another 10 times. LaGrange's biggest lead was seven points, coming in the first half. The Cougars had their largest lead, 84-77 with 2:53 left.

Julian Cameron tied the game twice with 3-pointers. Cameron's first trey tied the game at 84. After James Contreras put Averett back up 87-84 with his own 3-pointer, Cameron answered with his second 3-pointer with 15 seconds left. Contreras was fouled with eight seconds left and hit both free throws to put the Cougars ahead to stay.

The Panthers host N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday and Pfeiffer on Sunday.
