ATLANTA, Ga. - LaGrange topped tournament host Oglethorpe 81-76 at the Oglethorpe Classic on Sunday. The Panthers (5-1) finished 2-0 in the tournament and have now won four straight games.
LC was coming off a 95-84 upset of 15th-ranked Emory on Saturday in their first game of the tournament.
"We bounced back from the Emory game and closed out this tournament with a great win today. Oglethorpe played hard and hit some big shots," Coach Kendal Wallace said. "We withstood their runs with solid defense and rebounding. I'm so proud of this team because of their toughness, tenacity, and togetherness.
Elijah Adedoyin led all scorers with 19 points. He was 7-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. In the two tournament games, Adedoyin had 39 points and hit 10 3s.
The Panthers jumped out to a 14-5 lead at outset of the game. It would be the largest lead by either team. Olson had two 3s and Adedoyin added another in the run. Oglethorpe cut LC's lead to three, 39-36, at halftime.
LaGrange held the lead through the first nine minutes of the second half. The Panthers were still trailing 71-67 with just over four minutes remaining. Adedoyin's final trey of the game put the Panthers up 72-71.
Now trailing by three, Oglethorpe had a chance to draw closer, but Thompson made his defensive play to thwart the Stormy Petrels' last threat. The Panthers added three free throws in the final 28 seconds for the 81-76 final score.
The Panthers open their USA South schedule next Saturday at Maryville.
