Golf: Panthers tied for first after first round of Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team is tied for first after the first round of the Jekyll Island Invitational. The Panthers, playing in their first tournament of the spring, had an even par team score of 288. 

LC is tied with third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in the team standings. Top-ranked Emory, second-ranked Huntingdon, and Hampden-Sydney round out the top five. The tournament field has seven of the top 10 teams in the Golfstat.com rankings.

Sophomores Sam Rogers and Ben Womack led the Panthers. Rogers is tied for first in the individual standings after a 4-under par 68 over the Pine Lakes course. Rogers played his final nine holes at 4-under par and led the squad with six birdies on his round. Womack shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for fourth. He started his round with an eagle 2 on the par 4 10th hole. Womack hit his drive to within 70 yards of the hole. He hit a sand wedge to the green, the ball landing two feet from the cup and rolling in.

Mathias Andersen (75), Jay Adams (76), and Nathan Garner (81) rounded out the rest of the scoring for LC.

The tournament continues Saturday with the second round.
