Golf: Lanier named Jack Nicklaus Award Division III National Player of the Year

Senior Logan Lanier is the 2017 Jack Nicklaus Award Division III National Player of the Year as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The award capped an outstanding 2016-17 year for Lanier, who earned recognition on national and conference levels.

"Logan is not only a good player but even a better young man and I can't think of someone more deserving than Logan," Coach Lee Richter said. "He was an academic All-American so he was good in the classroom of which I'm also proud of. He's going to make someone a good emplyee one day. If every young man was like Logan I would coach till I was 100. His parents did a heck of a good job raising him. He'll be successuful in whatever he decides to do."

In addition to receiving the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, the Lanier and the other four recipients will compete in the Barbasol Shootout for an exemption into the PGA TOUR's Barbasol Championship, held July 20-23, at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika, Alabama. The Barbasol Shootout will be held Saturday, June 3 and tee off at 1:30 p.m. at the storied Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio - the same club where Jack Nicklaus first learned the game of golf as a young boy.

Nicklaus will recognize the Nicklaus Award recipients the following day at 10 am during the final round of the PGA Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Lanier is a three-time Division III PING All-American, earning first team honors the past two seasons. He has also earned Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors twice and has been on the USA South Academic All-Conference team four times. Lanier has been selected to the Division III Ping South Region three times. He was the USA South Player of the Year in 2016 and has been on the USA South All-Conference team all four years.

 At the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship, Lanier was fourth in the individual standings. He was low medalist at this year's USA South Tournament. Lanier is second in the current Division III Golfstat rankings. This season, he has finished in the top five in nine of 10 tournaments. In addition to winning the USA South Tournament, Lanier tied for first at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational and was second at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational. He finished the season with a 71.08 stroke average per round.
Lanier graduated cum laude, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Entrepreneurship and a minor in Mathematics. He received the school's Eagle Award which is given to the top male and female student athlete. Lanier was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and the Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society. He was a tutor in mathematics and a volunteer for the Our Daily Bread food program in LaGrange, Georgia.
