JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - Led by senior Cory Howard the LaGrange golf team charged into the lead after the second round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, being played at the Jekyll Island Golf Club's Pine Lakes course.
Howard tied his career best round with a 6-under par 66 and moved up 20 places in the individual standing into second place, three strokes behind Methodist's Mason Stutler. Howard had a bogey free round, highlighted by an eagle on 18, to go with four birdies.
As a team, the Panthers shot the low score of the day, an even par 288 and have a two day total of 578. Fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan is the only team within 10 shots of the Panthers, six shots back in second place.
No. 2 Oglethorpe is in third place 11 shots back with a 589 total. Third-ranked Methodist and first round co-leaders Huntingdon and Claremont-Mudds-Scripps are tied for fourth, another 17 shots back. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Huntingdon started the day one shot up on the Panthers.
Howard is one of three Panthers in the top 10 of the individual standings. Sophomores Logan Lanier and Osborn Theam are part of a four-way tie for ninth with 145 totals. Lanier had a 1-over par 73 and Theam a 2-over par 74 on Saturday.
Freshman Ryan Najim was five over par after his first eight holes. He recovered with back-to-back birdies, then eight straight pars to finish with a 3-over 75. Junior Alex Ball came in with a round of 78.
