Golf: Panthers start off strong at Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team got off to a strong start at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Friday.

The Panthers shot a team score of 2-over par 290 for the first round and were just one shot back of club house leader Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. 12 teams remained out on the course to complete the first round.

The 30-team tournament field has 13 teams in the Division III Top 25 rankings, including top-ranked Texas-Tyler, No. 2 Oglethorpe, No. 3 Methodist, and No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan. The Panthers finished the day ahead of all four in the team standings. They were 16 shots better than Texas-Tyler.

Sophomore Osborn Theam led the Panthers with a 1-under par 71. Theam made the turn at 1-over but recorded three birdies against a single bogey on the back nine holes.

Fellow sophomore Logan Lanier was a shot back after and even par round of 72. Lanier had an up and down round with four birdies and bogeys each.

Senior Cory Howard started his round with 10 straight pars, before having a stretch of three bogeys against one birdie for the next seven holes. Howard birdied the par 5 18th hole to finish at 2-over par 73.

Freshman Ryan Najim came in with a 2-over 74. Najim had a birdie on the par 5 15th hole. 

The tournament resumes play Saturday with the final round on Sunday.
