The LaGrange golf team opened its Spring schedule by winning the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate Invitational on Sunday at the resort's Mountain View course.
The Panthers, ranked 10th in the Golfstat Division III rankings, finished with a team score of 589, beating USA South rival and third-ranked Methodist by four shots. First round leader Guilford tied with Methodist for second. Second-ranked Oglethorpe was fourth, five shots back of the Panthers.
The Panthers were in second place after the first round on Saturday, four shots back of Guilford.
For the Panthers, it was their first win in this tournament, which started in 2002.
Senior Cory Howard and freshman Ryan Najim earned spots on the All-Tournament team. Howard was second in the individual standings after rounds of 73-69 for a 142 total. Najim, playing as an individual, had rounds of 69-76 for a 145 total to come in fourth.
Sophomore Logan Lanier tied for 11th with rounds of 75-73 for a 148 total. Sophomore Osborn Theam had rounds of 75-75 to tie for 17th with a 150 total. Junior Alex Ball followed at 152 with rounds of 74-78. Sophomore Anthony Scolapio rounded out the team's scoring with a 157 total after rounds of 82-75.
In addition to Najim, freshmen Eric Havixbeck and Jake Nelson also played as individuals in the tournament. Havixbeck had the second lowest round by a Panther on Sunday with a 71 and finished with a 153 total. Nelson shot rounds of 78-79 for a 157 total.
The Panthers play in the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate Invitational on March 13-15.
