FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - The LaGrange golf team captured the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club.
The Panthers led by one shot over Huntingdon after Monday's first round, but they pulled away in the final round to win by 14 shots over Averett and Berry, who tied for second.
The Panthers shot a team score of two-over par 286 in windy conditions. Only Sewanee (293) and Greensboro (295) came within 10 shots of the Panthers' second round score.
Leading the charge for the Panthers was freshman Osborn Theam. Theam shot a final round three-under par 68 for a 139 total to win the individual championship by one stroke over Averett's Onni Hurri.
Theam overcame four bogeys in the round with seven birdies. He drained a 30-foot putt for birdie on the 14th hole.
Junior Cory Howard had a final round one-over par 72 to finish at even par 142 for the tournament and tied for third. Howard's round was highlighted by chipping in from the fringe on the 9th hole for a birdie. He joined Theam on the All-Tournament team.
Freshmen Anthony Scolapio and Logan Lanier had rounds of 72 and 74. Scolapio tied for 11th with a 146 total, while Lanier was at 148 to tie for 17th. Senior Freddie Wolford had a round of 79 and finished with a 159 total.
The Panthers play in the Golfweek Fall Invitational in Sandestin, Fla. on Oct. 13-15.
