Football: Brevard scores in closing seconds to beat Panthers 38-34

BREVARD- Brevard scored the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds to defeat LaGrange 38-34 in a USA South game Saturday. 

Trailing 31-27, the Panthers took the lead with 1:08 remaining. Caleb Speir threw 13 yards to Marcus Campbell to cap a short 6-play 49-yard drive. It was Speir's third touchdown pass of the game. He finished with 212 yards passing. Campbell led all receivers with eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns.

Brevard (2-5, 2-3 USA South) drove 61 yards in just seven plays for the winning score. Bubba Craven hauled in Dalton Cole's fourth touchdown pass of the game from 21 yards out with just 19 seconds left. The Panthers' last chance ended on a fumble on their first play after the ensuing kickoff.

LC led 27-17 at haltime as the two teams each scored in the final 32 seconds. The Panthers led first, as Speir threw a short touchdown pass from the 4-yard line to Tyler Benjamin. Brendon Scott, who rushed for a game and season-high 116 yards on 14 carries, scored from the 1-yard line for a 14-3 lead. Scott's 10-yard run gave the Panthers a 20-10 lead.

Brevard closed within 20-17 with 32 seconds left in the half. The Panthers needed only seven seconds to answer. Speir hooked up with Campbell on a 45-yard strike to make it 27-17. The Tornados controlled the third quarter, scoring twice to take a 31-27 lead to the final quarter.

The Panthers host Methodist next Saturday on Senior Day. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
