Maryville spoiled Homecoming 2018 for LaGrange with a 37-17 USA South win over the Panthers in Callaway Stadium on Saturday. The Scots (4-2, 4-0 USA South) remained tied with Averett for the top spot in the conference standings. The Panthers are now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
LC led 9-7 at halftime but the Scots scored 30 unanswered points at one point in the second half. The Panthers were at or inside the Scots' 5-yard line three times but came away with no points. Maryville had 522 yard of offense, 339 on the ground.
The Panthers led 3-0 after the first quarter on a 37-yard Alex Rivera field goal. Maryville came back with a 60-yard touchdown run from Elijah Chenier to go up 7-3. It took the Panthers four plays to respond. Caleb Speir hit a wide open Austin Sapp down the middle for a 42-yard TD strike and the 9-7 lead.
In the third quarter, Nick Searcy scooped up a Scot fumble and returned to the Maryville 5-yard line. The Panthers could not cash in the opportunity as Rivera's field goal was blocked. Elijah Rachell's 4-yard run put the Scots ahead to stay, 14-9. Speirs' 17-yard pass to D.J. Owens closed out the game's scoring.
Speir finished the game 18-for-29 for 269 yards and the two touchdowns. Benjamin had four catches for 97 yards. Brandon Ray had seven total tackles and forced a fumble to lead the defense.
The Panthers play at Brevard in a USA South game next Saturday.
