The LaGrange football team began preparation for the upcoming 2016 season with a two-hour practice Sunday in helmets and shorts. The Panthers are beginning their 11th season and open up the schedule Saturday, Sept. 3 with their traditional season opener against Birmingham-Southern in Birmingham, Ala.
Third-year head coach Matt Mumme and the coaching staff welcomed 121 players on the first day. The defense practiced at Callaway Stadium, while the offense went through drills on the team's practice field.
"I thought we had a great first day of practice," Mumme said. "I believe it was the best first day since I've been here. There was a lot of intesity on both sides of the ball.
"There was a lot of talent on the field that excites myself and the coaching staff. The sky is the limit for this team. We just have to keep working hard."
The Panthers continue practicing in helmets and shorts through Tuesday. They put on shoulder pads Wednesday before going to full pads on Friday.
After the opener against Birmingham-Southern, the Panthers host Berry in Callaway Stadium on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
