Baseball: Panthers' season ends with loss in deciding Game 5 of Birmingham Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LaGrange's 2019 season ended with a 14-6 loss to Birmingham-Southern in the deciding Game 5 of the Birmingham Regional. The Panthers finished 32-12; winning their third straight USA South Tournament and advancing to a NCAA Regional for the third straight year.

Birmingham-Southern (37-13) built a 7-0 lead after three innings. The Panthers got on the board in the fifth when E.J. Churchich led off the inning with his fifth home run of the season to make it 7-1. Trailing 8-2, the Panthers pulled within two with a four-run eighth inning. Jack Layrisson walked with the bases loaded for the first run. Judd Moore reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play brought in two more runs. Braden Shealy capped the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single to make it 8-6. Birmingham-Southern answered with a six-run ninth to put the game out of reach. Michael Menheart (1-2), the first of seven Panther pitchers took the loss. Spencer Douches and Austin Brown combined to hold BSC to a run over five innings leading up to the ninth. The Panthers finished with eight hits. Trey Pearce had two hits, including a double. McKinley Erves added a double.

The game was the final one for seven seniors: Brown, Shealey, Tripp Bridges, Austin Fain, Rhett Hollon, Trey Robinson, and Ryan Ross.
