Baseball: Pfeiffer evens USA South series with Panthers

Pfeiffer evened the USA South series with No. 20 LaGrange with a 9-5 win Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers are now 23-9 overall and 14-5 in conference play.

The Panthers banged out 16 hits in the loss. McKinley Erves, Joe Ruth, and E.J. Churchich had 11 of the hits. Erves and Churchich each had four hits, while Ruth had three hits and two RBIs.

LC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Three straight hits by Erves, Ruth, and Churchich produced the run. Pfeiffer (22-5, 13-4 USA South) came back with five runs in the fourth off Richie Post (5-1). Bryan Kowalski's grand slam with two outs in the inning was the big blow. The Falcons added two more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 7-1. Ruth's two-run single in the eighth made it a 7-3 game. Pfeiffer answered with two runs off reliever Austin Brown in the ninth to lead 9-3. The Panthers got back the runs on pinch-hitter Braden Shealy's RBI triple followed by Erves' fourth hit of the game. Ruth and Churchich loaded the bases with singles. But Dalton Brinkley retired Jack Layrisson on a fly ball to end the game.

The two teams meet Sunday at 2 p.m.
