No. 20 LaGrange split a non-conference doubleheader with Millsaps on Wednesday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers (22-8) won Game 1 5-0 before the Majors (6-22) earned a split with a 7-5 Game 2 victory.
Gibson Bittner (4-3) and Tanner Chafin combined for a five-hitter to lead LC to the 5-0 win. Bittner surrendered five hits over five innings, walked one and struck out seven. Chafin retired 12 0f the 13 batters he faced to record his fourth save of the year. McKinley Erves and Jack Layrisson each had two hits,with both haveing a triple, The Panthers scored three runs off sacrifice flies by Rhett Hollon, Trey Pearce, and Joe Ruth.
Millsaps spotted the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then scored five in the second and two more in the fourth to build a 7-2 lead. Pearce's two-out two-run double in the first gave LC the early lead. LC rallied in its final at-bat of the seven inning game. Pearce's RBI single made it 7-3. Layrisson scored on a wild pitch and Hollon's run-scoring one-out base hit cut the Majors' lead to 7-5. Reliever Jackson Russo retired the next two batters to seal the win for Millsaps. Erves had two more hits and scored twice. Michael Menheart (1-1) took the loss for LC. Coston Anderson allowed two runs over four innings, striking out a career-high nine.
The Panthers host conference-leading Pfeiffer in a USA South weekend series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
