Baseball: Panthers even USA South series with No. 20 Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. - LaGrange evened its weekend USA South series with No. 20 Piedmont with a 7-4 win Saturday. The Panthers upped their record to 14-6 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.

Cael Chatham and McKinley Erves accounted for six of LC's 12 hits and drove in six runs. Both Chatham and Erves had three hits and three RBIs each. Liam Carbone and Austin McDade each had a double included in their two hits each.

Richie Post (3-0) gave up three runs in five innings to get the win. Spencer Douches allowed an unearned run in 3-1/3 innings of relief. Gibson Bittner retired the last two batters in the ninth to earn his second save.

LC opened the scoring with Erves' two-run single in the top of the second. Piedmont answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Panthers tied the game in the third on Carbone's RBI double.

The Panthers took the lead for good in the fifth. Chatham walked with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run. Erves followed with a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 lead. LC added insurance runs in the seventh and ninth on Chatham's run-scoring single and sacrifice fly. Piedmont got an unearned run in the ninth before Bittner closed out the game.

The two team conclude the weekend series Sunday at 2 p.m.
