Baseball: Panthers split USA South doubleheader with Berea

LaGrange and Berea split a USA South doubleheader Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers (8-4, 3-1 USA South) run-ruled Berea (4-5, 1-1 USA South) 15-3 in Game 1; the Mountaineers held on to take Game 2 10-8.

Game 1
LC broke open the game with a 10-run fifth inning. E.J. Churchich and Joe Ruth each had a two-run double in the inning. Austin McDade drove in two runs with a base hit following Churchich's hit. The Panthers finished with 13 hits and took advantage of four Berea errors, leading to 11 unearned runs. Churchich, Ruth, and Rhett Hollon each had two hits. Trey Pearce had an RBI double also. Richie Post (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings to pick up the win. He gave up three hits, walked none, and struck out five.

Game 2
Berea had a five-run second inning to take an early lead in the second game. The Panthers answered with three runs in the second and four more in the fourth to go up 7-5. Liam Moreno, who had three hits, had an RBI single in the second. Churchich drove in the first run in the fourth with a double. Cael Chatham capped the inning with a two-run double to give LC the lead. The Mountaineers came back with five in the fifth off starter J.R. Robinson and reliever Gibson Bittner (0-3). The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Churchich scored on a passed ball. LC loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth. Center fielder Ty Williams ran down Churchich's line drive to deep center for the final out. The Panthers finished with 12 hits. Hollon also had three hits, while Chatham and Churchich had two each.

The two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at 10 a.m. weather permitting.
