ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange opened its USA South schedule with a sweep of N.C. Wesleyan in a doubleheader Monday at Baur Field. The Panthers (7-3, 2-0 USA South) rallied to win Game 1 7-5, then completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the second game. Weather cancelled the series' first game Sunday.
The Panthers rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the first game. Richie Post started for LC, pitching 5-2/3 innings. He allowed four runs, all earned, struck out a career-high 11, and walked only one. Spencer Douches (2-0) allowed a run in two innings of relief to get the win, while Gibson Bittner closed out the game to get his first save of the season. The Panthers plated three runs in the seventh innings and two more in the eighth to go up 7-4. Trey Pearce had an RBI double in the seventh. Cael Chatham drove in his second run of the game with a single in the eighth. Chatham and Austin McDade had two hits each in the game. Liam Carbone had two RBIs and scored twice. Dawson Weaver also had a double.
Freshmen Cael Chatham and Liam Moreno each hit home runs to power LC's second game win. The two home runs were the first ones of the season for the Panthers. Moreno hit a two-run home run as part of a three-run fourth inning to give LC a 4-0 lead. The Bishops (3-3, 0-2 USA South) got all three of their runs off J.R. Robinson (2-0) in the bottom of the inning. Chatham led off the fifth with his home run and Moreno added a two-out RBI double to put the Panthers up 6-3. Robinson pitched six innings before giving way to Austin Fain. Fain allowed only one hit, struck out four in three innings to pick up his first save.
The Panthers host Berea in a three-game USA South series starting with a doubleheader Saturday.
