BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LaGrange split a doubleheader with Birmingham-Southern at Striplin Field on Saturday. The Panthers (2-1) took Game 1 5-2, then their counterparts won Game 2 4-1.
J.R. Robinson (1-0) went 6-1/3 innings to win the first game. He allowed an unearned run and five hits. Spencer Douches pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, also allowing an unearned run, walking two and striking out four.
The Panthers banged out 12 hits, with all but one in the lineup getting a hit. Chris West had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Dawson Weaver had two hits, including an RBI triple. Joe Ruth also had two hits.
LC got two runs in the second inning off BSC starter Andy Hammond (0-1). With two outs, Weaver tripled in Rhett Hollon for the first run. McKinley Erves followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers doubled their lead to 4-0 in fifth. Austin McDade's two-out bases loaded hit drove in two more runs. LC extended its lead to 5-0 in the seventh on Ryan Ross' run-scoring single.
BSC limited the Panthers to five hits in the second game. Erves had two of the hits, including a double. LC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Hollon and Weaver led off the inning with back-to-back single. Hollon moved over to third on a fly out and scored on Ruth's ground out. The host Panthers tied the game off starter Austin Fain in the fourth, then got the go-ahead runs off reliever Gibson Bittner (0-1) in the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh.
The Panthers host Emory on Tuesday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium at 5 p.m.
