Ryan Ross' sacrifice fly lifted LaGrange to a 4-3 10-innning win over Maryville on Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The Panthers (13-11, 3-5 USA South) evened the weekend USA South series with the victory. The two teams finish the three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m.
LC had to rally to force extra innings. Maryville (18-4, 4-4 USA South) took a 3-1 after four innings. The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-2. Jackson Patrick was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Jacob Gassert drove in Patrick with a two-out triple to center field.
The Scots threatened in the top of the eighth. An error and a one-out double put runners on second and third. Austin Perez relieved starter Collin Barrett. He forced a ground out to short for the second out, then Zach English (3-0) came on to get the final out. Barrett gave up three runs on sixt hits, walked a batter and struck out three in 7-1/3 innings.
The Panthers tied the game in their half of the eighth. James Poropatic led off the inning with a single. He moved over to third on a ground out and a wild pitch. Jack Layrisson reached on a one out walk to put runners on the corners. Austin Jones laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring in Poropatic with the tying run.
English stayed in the game and retired the Scots in order in the ninth and pitched around an error in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Rhett Mixon walked to start the Panther 10th. He stole second and went to third on Layrisson's third hit of the game. Jones was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ross lifted a fly ball to center off Samuel Joiner (1-1), the last of seven pitchers used by Maryville. Mixon easily beat the throw home to end the game.
LC had 10 hits in the game. Layrisson had a triple included in his three hits. Poropatic also had three hits and was on base four times.
