Baseball: Panthers stay hot; top Oglethorpe 9-5 for fourth straight win

LaGrange downed Oglethorpe 9-5 at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium  in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

The win was the fourth straight for the Panthers, now 17-10. They have won seven of their last eight games. The win also gave the Panthers a split of the two-game season series with the Stormy Petrels (11-11).

Casey Bell's bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning broke open a tight game, giving the Panthers a 7-2 lead. Bell also drove in a run in the third with a ground out. The junior had two sacrifice bunts in the game, upping his season total to a NCAA Division III leading 16.

The Panthers had four sacrice bunts in the game. They are the Division III team leader with 41.

Tavin Thompson had a double included in his two hits and scored four runs. Keith Sims had two base hits and scored three times. Chad Pigg had an RBI and two singles. Cain Sauls drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

Freshman Austin Brown (1-2) started and went five innings to get his first win of the season. He scattered six hits and allowed two runs. Josh Smith followed Brown and gave up two runs in three innings of work. Oglethorpe got an unearned run in the ninth off Stephen Coelho.

The Panthers host the University of Chicago on Friday in a doubleheader. The two teams will play nine innings the first game and seven innings in the second game. The Panthers close out the week Saturday at seventh-ranked Emory. It is the first of two meetings with the Eagles, who play at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium on April 12 to close out the regular season.
