SEWANEE, Tenn.- Jake Butcher's two-run home run broke a 1-1 tie and LaGrange went on to a 8-3 win over Sewanee on Thursday. The Panthers improved to 5-3 on the season, with four of the wins coming against the Tigers (0-8).
Butcher had four hits on the day that included a double and the home run, his second of the season. Chad Pigg had three hits, including a double, as the Panthers finished the game with 13 hits.
Leading 4-2, the Panthers put the game away with a run in the sixth and three more in the eighth. Keith Sims had an RBI single in the sixth, while Pigg and Tavin Thompson had run-scoring hits in the eighth. Casey Bell's sacrifice fly plated Joe Pradat with the Panthers' final run.
Toby King pitched five innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on four hits. Andrew Weekly struck out four in two scoreless innings of relief. Zach English pitched a scorless eighth inning, while Austin Perez closed out the game, allowing a run in the ninth.
The Panthers will play a three-game series against Wabash at the Perfect Game LakePoint Complex in Cartersville, Ga. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday also starting at 1 p.m.
