Box Score The LaGrange men's basketball team moved into sole possession of second place in the USA South West Division with a 70-66 win over Covenant in the Barnes Center on Saturday. The victory completed the first regular season sweep by the Panthers over the Scots (7-6, 3-3 USA South) since the 2016 season.
Bershard Edwards continued his outstanding play with a career-high 17 points. Edwards was a perfect 5-for-5 shooting 3s. In the last four games, the junior guard is shooting 70% (14-of-20) from 3-point range and 57.3% for the season. Edwards added six rebounds and four steals Saturday.
Kyle Brown followed Edwards with 16 points, 14 coming in the second half. Ronald Youngblood added 11 points. Julian Cameron was held to a season-low 7 points.
Will Crumley had a game-high 37 points for the Scots, who lost their third straight game. Crumley was the only Scot in double figures.
The Panthers had a slight 39-38 edge rebounding. Covenant outscored LC 54-30 in Thursday's game, but only had a 38-32 advantage Saturday. Cameron and Brown tied for game honors with 7 rebounds each.
The teams were dead locked at 33 at halftime. Crumley gave the Scots a quick 35-33 lead. But Edwards put LC ahead to stay, 37-35, with a 3-pointer.
Leading 47-43, the Panthers held the Scots to just six points over a six-minute span to build their largest lead of the game. Brown keyed the 15-6 run with six points and three rebounds. A jumper by Cameron and two free throws by Drew Shepherd gave LC a 62-49 lead with six minutes remaining.
The Panthers led 67-59 with two minutes left. The Scots scored the next seven points to make it a one-point game. Brown made a pair of free throws for a 69-66 lead. The Scots held the ball, playing to send the game into overtime. But Crumley's 3-point attempt was off the mark with Edwards coming away with the rebound. Cameron made the second of two free throws to ice the game for the 70-66 final.
In the first half, Edwards had 11 of his points, making 4-of-6 shots, including a perfect 3-for-3 shooting 3s. Youngblood had all 11 of his points in the half. Crumly had 19 of the Scots' 33 first half points.
The Panthers started the game similar to the way they did Thursday in the 76-69 LC win. Edwards and Youngblood each hit a trey as the Panthers grabbed an early 12-4 lead. Crumly scored the Scots' first 10 points in sparking a 10-0 run. Jackson Fitzgerald's layup put Covenant up 14-12.
The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half. Kyle Brown hit a jumper, then Zac Hill hit the second of two free throws to put LC up 33-29 with the 2:13 left in the half. The Scots held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the half to tie the game at 33.
LC is scheduled to be off until Feb. 25 when they play at Maryville. The Panthers will host Maryville on Feb. 27.
