Cross Country: Sarah Bearden takes third as Panther teams finish strong at West Georgia Invitational

MEN'S RESULTS      WOMEN'S RESULTS

CARROLLTON, Ga. -The LaGrange cross country teams faced tough competition Friday at the University of West Georgia Invitational. The Panthers were the only Division III team in the 10 team field.

"LaGrange College last competed in the UWG Invitational in the fall of 2013," Coach Joe Strickland said. "The competition was tougher today and to go out as the only Division III school in the field and be able to truly compete and hold our own is something that I am really proud of our teams for being able to do.

"This continues to show that the work we are doing is getting the results we want."

The Panther women brought home an impressive fifth place finish. Sophomore Sarah Bearden paced the women with a time of 20:44 over the 5k course for a podium finish. Bearden placed third overall out of 62 runners.

Following Bearden, Ashley Wright (25:05), Davida White (25:16), Jessica Morton (27:21) and Laura Hayhurst (29:53) rounded out the scoring. The women dropped an impressive 68 seconds off of the team average from this same race two years ago, running from a 26:48 average to a 25:40 average finish time.

On the men's side, sophomore Hiram Haro-Oropeza led the way with a time of 35:06 over the 8k course. Following Oropeza were Bill Singleton (36:10), Chris Smith (36:14), and Tyler Baars (36:41). Due to only having four finishers, the men were unable to score and qualify for official results. It's important to note that the men all finished the course in the top 40 of the field and had solid performances.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the University of North Georgia. The women's 6k will start at 8:15a.m. with the men's 8k to follow at 9a.m.
