Cross Country: Panther teams compete against top teams from region at Clara Bowl 5K

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.- The LaGrange cross country teams opened their 2014 season Saturday at the Clara Bowl 5K hosted by Berry College.

The Panthers, along with host Berry, Emory, Oglethorpe and Savannah College of Art & Design. Both Berry and Emory finished in the top 10 at last season's NCAA Division III regional championships.

"This was a great meet for us to run. It allowed us to run against some of the best NAIA and Division III Cross Country programs in the South, so to get out there and compete with them really pushes our team to the next level. " head coach Joe Strickland said. "The course allowed us to see where we are strong at but also where we need some improvements. Everyone worked hard and ran well, it is a great starting point for the season."

Freshman Chris Smith had a time of 34:33 to lead the men. Junior Laura Brandner had a time of 31:43 for the women.

The teams will run in the Sewanee Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Sewanee, Tenn.
