Cross Country: USA South releases preseason polls for men's and women's teams

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Maryville College men and the Meredith College women were the top picks in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches' polls. Maryville placed third at last year's championship meet, while Meredith was second in the women's meet.

The LaGrange College men and women, under head coach Matt Donnett, were sixth and seventh respectively in the polls. Sophomore Lauren Brandner returns after earning USA South All-Conference honors and competing in the NCAA Regional. Sophomore Chase McCulley returns to lead the men.

The 2013 season marks the first in the USA South for new Conference member Covenant College as well as William Peace College who will field a men's team for the first time.

Maryville received four of the eight first place votes to go along with 44 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Piedmont College finished second in the balloting with 40 points and three first place votes. In a tie for third place, newcomer Covenant and Methodist University each garnered 35 points. In fifth place, Averett University earned 26 points and the final first place vote while the Panthers, Ferrum College and William Peace concluded the poll with 24, 12 and eight points, respectively. 

The men's cross country season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 30 as Covenant, Maryville and Piedmont are in action.

On the women's side, the 2013 season marks the first in the USA South for new Conference member Covenant College who is a former member of the Great South Athletic Conference.

Meredith received eight of 10 first place votes, to go along with 80 points, as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Mary Baldwin College finished second in the balloting with 65 points while Maryville College placed third with 62 points and one first place vote. Rounding out the top half of the poll were newcomer Covenant who collected 60 points along with the final first place vote and Piedmont College who garnered 48 points.

The women's cross country season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 30th as Covenant, Maryville, Meredith and Piedmont are in action.

Both Panther teams open their season Sept. 6 at the North Georgia Tech Invitational in Clarkesville, Ga.
