Volleyball: Suzanne Henson named Panthers' new head coach

LaGrange College athletic director Jennifer Claybrook announces the hiring of Suzanne Henson as Head Volleyball Coach. Henson comes to LaGrange after five seasons as head coach at NCAA Division III member the University of Texas at Tyler.

"We are thrilled to have such an incredible head coach with a proven record of success who values the student-athlete experience. She is high energy, dedicated to her players and program and committed to the mission and vision of LaGrange College," Claybrook said. "She inherits a talented team with great leadership. We are very excited about the future."

Henson was 94-67 at UT-Tyler and has a career record of 211-125 record as a head coach. Prior to UT-Tyler, she spent five seasons at East Texas Baptist University. She led UT-Tyler to a 20-12 record in her final season, while reaching the American Southwest Conference championship tournament for the third straight season. Henson was 42-38 in conference play in her five seasons.

She took over a UT-Tyler program that had only one winning season prior to her hiring. Henson produced a winning record in four of the five seasons, including a program-record 24-win season in 2013. UT Tyler won 20 or more matches in three of the seasons after not having a 20-win season in the first eight years of the program.

"I'm so honored and thankful to accept the position of head volleyball coach at LaGrange College. I fell in love with the college and community on my interview visit," Henson said. "I left knowing I wanted to return and be part of the LC family. I've had first class treatment since the initial interview.

"I am impressed with everyone I met, especially Coach Claybrook. I value her genuine Christ-like demeanor and true commitment to her staff. I admire her ethics and values. My goals and beliefs line up directly with hers and influenced my decision. I'm blessed with the opportunity to serve under her and join the athletic staff."

Henson had a 117-58 record at East Texas Baptist, including an 84-14 record in the ASC. She led ETBU to three ASC titles and three trips to the NCAA Division III national tournament, along with being named ASC Coach of the Year two times. The team advanced to the ASC tournament in each of her five seasons as head coach.

She recorded her 200th career win against McMurry University last season.  UT-Tyler had an ASC tournament win over Hardin-Simmons before a loss to Concordia ended the 2015 season.

Henson has also served as a member of the NCAA South Region Ranking Committee and was the senior woman administrator at ETBU.

"I believe in the mission of LaGrange College.  I'll work diligently to uphold the confidence invested in me. I'm excited to get started with the season and looking forward to meeting the players," said Henson. "It is going to be a great fall. ALL IN … ALL THE TIME."
