Volleyball:  Panthers down Mary Baldwin; lose five-set thriller to Greensboro in USA South matches

GREENBORO, N.C. - LaGrange split a pair of USA South matches Saturday in the Greensboro College Hanes Gym. The Panthers (15-16, 5-8 USA South) downed Mary Baldwin 3-1, then lost in five sets to host Greensboro.

The Panthers defeated Mary Baldwin 25-8, 17-25, 25-13 and 25-17. Maggie Ivester led the Panthers with 12 kills, while Mary Katherin Schmitz had 33 assists and Aspen Coggins 14 digs.

Greensboro took the first sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. The Panthers evened the match by taking the next two; 25-22 and 25-21.

The Panthers fell behind 9-4 in the decisive fifth set. They got within one, 12-11, on a kill by Danyelle Carr. But the Pride closed out the set and match by scoring the final three points.

Ivester had a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs. Carr had 12 kills and Katie Chancellor added 11 more. Mary Katherine Schmitz had a double-double of 43 assists and 11 digs.

Coggins led the Panthers with 24 digs, while Sterling Ancrum had 21. 

The Panthers play at Huntingdon in a USA South match Wednesday.
