Volleyball: Panthers get comeback win against Ferrum; split at USA South Quad Match

LaGrange came from behind to down Ferrum at the USA South Quad Match hosted by the Panthers on Saturday in Richter Gym.

The Panthers (12-15, 4-7 USA South) downed their visiting counterparts 3-2. The Panthers took the first set 25-22, but Ferrum took the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16 to go up 2-1.

The Panthers held on in the fourth set 25-23 to set up the deciding fifth set. Tied at 1-1, the Panthers ran off five straight points to take control of the set. Leading 10-6, they ran off the final five points to take the set 15-6 and the match.

Katie Chancellor had a match-high 16 kills for the Panthers. Mary Katherine Schmitz had a double-double of a match-high 33 assists and a team-high 14 digs.

Schmitz was one of four Panthers with double figures in digs. Aspen Coggins had 13, Maggie Ivester 12, and Megan Lee 11.

In the second match against Averett, the Panthers took the first set 26-24. Trailing 24-23, the Panthers tied it on a Cougar attack error, then got back-to-back kills from Ivester and Sydney Marshall to win the set.

But the Cougars came back to take the next three sets to close out the match by scores of 25-18, 25-9, 25-17.

Ivester led the Panthers with 10 kills, while Danyelle Carr added nine and had an attack percentage of .316.

Schmitz had 30 assists in the match and Sterling Ancrum led the team with 11 digs.

The Panthers host Agnes Scott in a non-conference match Tuesday.
