2013-14 in Review: Volleyball takes back-to-back USA South Rookie of the Week selections

The LaGrange volleyball team had back-to-back USA South Rookie of the Week selections to start the 2014 season.

Freshman outside hitter Katie Chancellor took the honor for the week ending Sept. 1.

Chancellor had 40 kills in leading the Panthers to a 3-1 record at the Huntingdon College Jubilee. She averaged 2.9 kills and 2.9 digs per set in the four matches and had double-doubles in the first two matches of the tournament. In a 3-0 win over Huntingdon, Chancellor had 12 kills and 11 digs along with four blocks. Against Mississippi College, she finished with 15 kills and 13 digs, a service ace and block in a 3-2 comeback victory. In the Birmingham Southern match, Chancellor had five digs and three kills. She finished the tournament with a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep of  Agnes Scott.

Mary Katherine Schmitz earned the honor for the week ending Sept. 8.

Schmitz played in her first three matches of the season at the BSC/McAttack Bash last weekend. In her first match against Victory (Tenn.), the freshman setter had 37 assists, seven digs and two kills. Schmitz had a double-double of 29 assists and 12 digs in a win over LeTourneau. She finished her week with 13 assists and six digs against tournament host Birmingham-Southern.
