Volleyball: USA South releases preseason coaches poll

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Averett University, under the direction of Head Coach Danny Miller in his 19th year, was picked in the preseason coaches poll to be the top team in the Northern Division of the USA South Athletic Conference volleyball standings in 2013. As for the Southern Division, Maryville College, under the direction of Head Coach Kandis Schram in her 28th year, was picked to be the favorite in 2013. In the overall voting, Maryville ranked first, followed by Averett and Piedmont College.

LaGrange, under sixth year head coach Julie Moses, will play in the Southern Division. The Panthers open their season Aug. 30-31 at the Huntingdon College Volleyball Jubilee in Montgomery, Ala.

Each divisional preseason poll only includes votes from coaches within that particular division while voting for the overall preseason poll includes votes from each coach in the Conference. This is the first season that the Conference will split into divisions in the sport of volleyball. The 2013 season also marks the first in the USA South for new Conference members Covenant College and Huntingdon College. Both institutions were former members of the Great South Athletic Conference.

In the North Division, Averett received seven of the eight first place votes and 49 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting. N.C. Wesleyan College ranked second in the poll with 42 points and the final remaining first place vote. Methodist College with 33 points and Meredith College with 32 points placed third and fourth, respectively, to round out the top-half of the divisional poll.

In the South Division, Maryville, last season's USA South Tournament runners-up, received four of the five first place votes and 16 points. Newcomer, Covenant, was picked second with 12 points while Piedmont grabbed the final remaining first place vote and 11 points to round out the top-half of the divisional poll.

The volleyball regular season gets underway on Friday, August 30 as seven of the league's 13 teams are in action.

For the second consecutive year, the 2013 USA South Tournament will head to Martinsville, Virginia as the Southern Virginia Recreation Facilities Authority will host the event. The contests will be held at Patrick Henry Community College. First round matches will take place on Friday, November 8, following by the semifinals and final which will be played on Saturday, November 9. The top-five seeded teams from the North Division and the top-three seeded teams from the South Division, after the conclusion of regular season competition, will advance to the tournament.
