NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - LaGrange lost two USA South matches in a tri-match hosted by Christopher Newport on Saturday. The Panthers (4-14, 1-3 USA South) lost 3-0 to the host Captains and 3-2 to Methodist.
Christopher Newport, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, beat the Panthers 25-14, 25-11 and 25-17. Methodist edged the Panthers 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26 and 15-10.
In the Methodist match, the Panthers rallied after falling behind 2-0. They never trailed in taking the third set, then hung on to win the fourth set to tie the match. Hayley LaFontaine's kill broke a 24-24 tie and Morgan Elrod's service ace clinched the set.
The Panthers led 4-3 in the early going of the deciding fifth set. Methodist ran off seven straight points to take a commanding 10-4 lead and went on to take the set and the match.
Nicole Wilson led the Panthers with 14 kills. LaFontaine added 11 kills and had a .500 attack percentage. Ella Weymiller had a team-high 23 digs, while Erin McKinstry had 38 assists.
The Panthers host Toccoa Falls in a non-conference match Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
