Volleyball: Panthers split two USA South matches

FERRUM, Va. - LaGrange opened the USA South portion of the 2012 schedule by splitting two matches Saturday in a tri-match. The Panthers downed host Ferrum before losing to Averett in their final match of the day.

The Panthers (4-10, 1-1 USA South) beat Ferrum 3-1, winning 25-17, 25-27, 25-21 and 25-16. The Panthers lost 3-0 to Averett by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-15.

Katie Covington had a match-high 19 kills and a .444 attack percentage against Ferrum. Amanda Singletary and Nicole Wilson had seven kills each. Singletary and Ella Weymiller each had a match-high 14 digs.

Covington had nine kills in the Averett match, while Wilson added eight. Singletary led the team with eight digs.

The Panthers play at Huntingdon on Tuesday in a non-conference match.
