Volleyball: Panthers come from behind to edge Toccoa Falls

LaGrange College came from behind to edge Toccoa Falls College 3-2 in the CEB Gym on Monday. The Panthers raised their season record to 14-10 with their second win this season over the Eagles (14-12).

The Panthers took the match by scores of 26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-9. The Panthers have won seven of their last eight matches, four of the wins in five sets. The Panthers are 5-1 in five-set matches this season, with two coming against Toccoa Falls.

Katie Covington had her team-leading 12th double-double of the season. She had a team-high 19 kills and added 16 digs. Mary Ann Washichek also had a double-double with 17 kills and tied for the team lead with 23 digs. Hayley LaFontaine added 11 kills. Erin McKinstry had 57 assists, while Kaydee Daniel tied Washichek with 23 digs.

The Panthers trailed by as many as six points in the first set. They battled back to tie the set five times. The Eagles held a 24-23 lead and were serving for the set, but Covington put down a kill to tie the set. After a miss hit by the Eagles put the Panthers up 25-24, Covington closed out the set with a short tip for the kill and the set.

The Eagles staged their own rally to take the second set. The Panthers led by as many as five in the early going and held a 20-16 lead after a kill by Washichek. But the Eagles took nine of the final 11 points to even the match.

The third set was a see-saw affair as the Panthers tied it on seven occasions. Wilson and Washichek had back-to-back kills to get the Panthers within one, 22-21. The Eagles were able to hold on to take the set and go up 2-1 in the match.

The Panthers pulled away to take the fourth set to force the final set. Leading 12-11, the Panthers went on a 11-4 run to open up an eight point lead. LaFontaine closed out the set with a tip to set up the final set.

The Panthers trailed only once in the fifth set. They jumped out to a 7-2 lead after Corona and Covington combined for a block. The Eagles got within a point, 10-9, but Covington put down a kill to start a 5-0 run to close out the match.
