Panthers lose GSAC matches to Piedmont, Salem

DEMOREST, Ga. – LaGrange College dropped a pair of GSAC matches at Cave Arena on Saturday. The Panthers lost 3-0 to Piedmont and 3-2 to Salem.

The Panthers (4-17, 1-4 GSAC) lost to Piedmont by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-18. Salem edged the Panthers by scores of 25-17, 19-25, 25-13, 22-25 and 16-14.

Katie Covington and Hayley LaFontaine each had double-doubles against Salem. Covington had team highs of 20 kills and 15 digs, while LaFontaine had 11 kills and 10 digs.

The Panthers led early in the first set against Salem. Erin Hazelrig's kill put the Panthers up 7-6. The Spirits won 11 of the next 14 points to open up a 17-11 lead. The Panthers never got closer than six points as the Spirits won 25-17.

The Panthers came back to tie the match in the second set. The Spirits scored the set's first point and never led again. The Panthers led by as many as eight, 23-15, after a kill by Megan Sachs. Kills by LaFontaine and Covington closed out the set for the Panthers.

Salem controlled the third set from the start and went on to a 25-13 win. The Panthers came back to tie the match with a 25-22 fourth set win. The Panthers never trailed in the set but never led by more than three points.

The Panthers held a 14-12 lead in the deciding fifth set. The Spirits were able to score the final four points to take the set and the match. The Panthers fell to 0-4 in five-set matches this season.

Piedmont controlled all three sets and never trailed in the match. Heather Stafford led the Lady Lions with a match-high 14 kills. Covington led the Panthers with eight kills and seven digs.

The Panthers host Piedmont on Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers will also host Agnes Scott and Wesleyan in GSAC matches Saturday beginning at noon.
