Panthers fall to Maryville and Salem
The Panthers fell 3-0 to Maryville by
scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-5. Salem edged the Panthers 3-2 by
scores of 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 24-26 and 15-11.
The Panthers rallied in the Salem match after falling behind 2-0.
Trailing 15-12 in the third set, the Panthers had a 7-2 run to take
the lead for good. Hannah Brooks' block put the Panthers up 19-17.
Anna Byars' kill finished the Panthers 25-22 win in the set.
The Panthers tied the match in the fourth set with a 26-24 win. The
Panthers led 6-0 and 21-13 late in the set. But Salem rallied to
take a 24-23 lead and serving for the match. After an attack error
tied the set at 24, Byars put down back-to-back kills to give the
Panthers the win.
Salem came back in the fifth set with a 15-11 win to take the
match. The Panthers led briefly at 4-3 and 5-4 after a kill by
Brooks. Salem came back to take the lead for good at 6-5 and went
on take the set and the match.
Byars led the Panthers with a season-high 13 kills and 28 digs.
Erin Hazelrig added nine kills and 17 digs. Kayla Black led the
team with 20 assists, while Crystal Colvin had 14 digs. Byars and
Brooks each had three solo blocks.
In the loss to Maryville, Byars led the Panthers with seven kills.
Kristen Barton had a team-high eight digs.
The Panthers travel to Atlanta on Thursday to take on Spelman in a
GSAC match.
