Women's Tennis: Panthers seventh in USA South coach's preseason poll

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The LaGrange women's team was picked seventh in the USA South coach's preseason poll as announced by the conference.

The Panthers, under head coach Matt Donnett, were 8-8 last season. The Panthers will be led by senior Caroline Brashier, who earned all-conference honors last season. They also return senior Blake Alford and sophomore Morgan McDonald.

Methodist University was the coach's choice to capture the women's tennis title. Last spring, the Monarchs captured the USA South Tournament title for the fourth consecutive season and their sixth straightr egular season championship

The 2014 season marks the first in the USA South for new conference members Covenant College and Huntingdon College. Both institutions are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference.

Methodist received 12 of 13 first place votes and 144 points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Meredith College finished second in the balloting with 129 points and the final first place vote. Placing third in the poll with 120 points was Huntingdon while Piedmont College came in at fourth with 107 points. Maryville College ranked fifth with 95 points and was followed in sixth by N.C. Wesleyan College who grabbed 83 points.

The 2014 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament will be played April 11-13 on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The women's tennis spring season gets underway on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as Huntingdon and Meredith are in action. The Panthers begin Saturday, March 1 against USA South opponent Meredith.
