Women's Tennis: USA South preseason poll places Panthers eighth

The LaGrange women's tennis team was eighth in the 2013 USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll released Wednesday.

The Panthers are starting their first season in the USA South under fourth-year head coach Matt Donnett. The Panthers were 3-11 last season and return senior Kelsey Ellison and junior Caroline Brashier, who earned Great South Athletic Conference All-Conference honors at #1 singles.

In addition to the Panthers, the 2013 season marks the first in the USA South for new conference members Maryville and Piedmont. All three schools are former members of the Great South Athletic Conference.

Methodist was picked to capture the 2013 USA South Athletic Conference title in the poll. Last spring, the Monarchs captured the conference tournament title for the third consecutive season. Methodist was tri-champion with Meredith and North Carolina Wesleyan for the 2012 regular season title.

Methodist received eight of 12 first-place votes and 118 total points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Meredith finished second in the balloting with 113 points and three first-place votes while Christopher Newport University followed in third with 97 points and the final first-place vote. N.C. Wesleyan secured fourth place with 93 points while Piedmont rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth with 69 points.

The 2013 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament will be played April 12-14 on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival in Rocky Mount, N.C.

The Panthers open their 2013 season at home Feb. 28 against Emmanuel.
