Women's Soccer: USA South preseason poll released as Panthers prepare for 2014 season

Last season, the LaGrange women's soccer team made their first appearance in the USA South postseason tournament. With the release of the 2014 USA South women's soccer preseason coaches' poll Wednesday; the Panthers are expected to reach the tournament again this season.

LaGrange was voted eighth by the coaches in the 13-team poll. The Panthers are starting their first season under new head coach Fred Wagenaar. Wagenaar had an impressive 139-27-19 record in nine years at Graceland (Iowa) University.

Piedmont was picked as the top team in the USA South by the coaches. The Lions captured the conference tournament title last year, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Piedmont received seven of the 13 first place votes and 137 total points. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Last fall's USA South regular season champions, Maryville College, finished second in the balloting with 136 points and five first place votes. The next three places in the poll were separated by just three points as Meredith was third with 111 points, Methodistwas fourth with 110 points and the final first place vote, while Averett was fifth with 109 points. Covenant and Greensboro rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth and sixth place with 95 and 70 points, respectively.

The women's soccer regular season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 29 as all 13 teams are in action. The Panthers host Judson (Ala.) at 4:30 p.m.

The semifinals and finals of the USA South Men's Women's Soccer Tournament will be held Nov. 7-8 in Martinsville, Va. at the Smith River Sports Complex. The first round games of the tournaments takes place Nov. 1 on the campuses of the higher seeded team. The top-eight seeded teams after the conclusion of regular season competition advance to the tournament.
